Here we are, it’s almost summer, the kids are out of school, the pool is open. You spent the last few months finding a good summer camp, lining up summer school and mapping out the family vacation.
Now would also be a great time to get a hearing health check up for the kids, yes, a hearing health check up. Before jumping into pools, putting those ear buds in and heading out to summer concerts, you need to get a handle on any hearing problems your children may have.
Most of the time, we think our kids are ignoring us (especially when we try to wake them up in the morning) or we think they can’t hear us because of their headphones or ear buds. There might have been some indicators form their teachers about “not listening”… sometimes what is interdependent as obstinance can actually be explained as a hearing problem.
The truth is, all those in-ear devices could be causing damage. Better to check it and curb it, than wait until it’s too late.
Sit down and have a good conversation with your kids, listen to their speech patterns, are they articulating sounds correctly? Are they responding in kind to what you are saying? Have you noticed them withdrawing from conversations? This can indicate hearing problems.
The up side to all of this is that hearing protection and hearing aids no longer carry the stigma it did years ago. Young people are all about having something in their ears, it’s the new fashion accessory !
We really get one chance at keeping our hearing healthy, let’s use this summer “down time” to get a check up.
